Environmental Assessment Update of the Viet Nam Coastal Wetlands Protection and Development Project

World Bank

The objectives of the Viet Nam Coastal Wetlands Protection and Development Project are to:

1. re-establish the coastal mangrove wetland ecosystems and sustain their habitat and coastal protection functions in the four Southern Mekong Delta provinces;
2. improve the economic and stable use of lands adjacent to the mangroves; and
3. improve the social and livelihood status of impoverished communities in order to reduce exploitation of mangrove ecosystems.

ESSA reviewed the social and environmental impacts of the Project to satisfy the requirements of a Category A Environmental Assessment report, covering both the project as presently proposed and the accompanying resettlement action plan. Additionally, ESSA revised the World Bank documents associated with the Project to ensure that they accurately reflected the findings, conclusions and recommendations arising from the review, and prepared a Draft Environmental Annex for the Project Implementation Document and the Project Appraisal Document.
