First Nations Land and Resource Information Needs Assessment

BC Treaty Commission

Land and resource information needs were believed to be impediments for some First Nations to completing Interim Measures Agreements and/or Agreements in Principle as part of the treaty process in British Columbia. ESSA Technologies Ltd. was hired to explore the nature and extent of potential problems in this area.

We designed an in-depth, 90-question survey that covered nine information management topics, and mailed it to 43 First Nations in Stage IV of the BC treaty process. We also interviewed representative from five First Nations in person to better understand the problems and identify potential solutions. We prepared a report that contained a synthesis of the feedback, an analysis of the results, and a suite of recommendations.
