Adaptive Management Training in Mexico
Trent University
This project significantly adapted and translated
into Spanish an adaptive management
training course developed by ESSA for the BC Ministry of Forests.
The focus of the training in Mexico was watershed management, particularly
steep watersheds to the east of Mexico City that are susceptible
to soil erosion and flooding. The 5-day course was delivered in
Spanish to 38 graduate students and professors working in the field
of watershed management at the Colegio Postgrado in Texcoco, Mexico.
This group included 5 participants from Ecuador. The students found
that the most critical uncertainties in watershed restoration were
actually the social and economic issues; the soil conservation,
reforestation and flood reduction methods are well tested and understood.
The course received very positive evaluations, and in June 2002
the course was delivered again, this time in Ibarra, Ecuador.
