As part of an effort to adequately manage the
complex fisheries of the South Pacific, ESSA was engaged to participate
in a four-week Systems Development Workshop convened at the University
of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. Key representatives from fisheries
departments around the region were trained in systems programming
techniques, and by the end of the month there, at least one working
system had been developed for each department. ESSA acted as educational
co-ordinator, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the workshop.
In particular, the ESSA project team:
 |
reviewed basic database programming methods; |
 |
helped participants develop their own operational
database systems; |
 |
reviewed key points in database system development,
and advanced topics in system maintenance; and |
 |
documented the results of the workshop and its
effectiveness in a final report to the South Pacific Commission. |
