State of Canada's Forests: Indicators of Forest Use,
Disturbance and Regeneration

Forestry Canada

Forestry Canada engaged ESSA to develop indicators for Canada's State of Forests reporting in the early 1990s. In one project, we developed an indicator for the rates of change in forest land use due to fire, insects, and harvesting for the major forest ecoregions of Canada. Tasks associated with the project included determining components of the indicator database (i.e., scope); revising the methodology for compiling and reporting indicator data; compiling the data; and preparing and updating the database. The project was documented in a report summarizing the data sources, the methodology and assumptions employed, the results obtained for the indicator, the recent and historical time trends of the indicator, and a comparison between current and historical conditions.

In another project for Forestry Canada, we examined the role of forests in satisfying the recreational needs of Canadians. The project team identified and developed a set of four indicators to measure consumptive and non-consumptive recreational forest use. Data were collected and analyzed for the following areas: park visits, membership in non-consumptive organizations, moose and bear hunting licence sales, and angling activity. ESSA also offered a series of recommendations to improve future social indicators.
