Development of a Management Strategy for Recreational
Fisheries in New Brunswick
Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Together with LGL Ltd., ESSA assessed the current
status of the recreational fisheries resource in New Brunswick and
facilitated the development of a formal strategy for increasing
the effectiveness of fisheries management. The project involved
a review of the current management programs of both the federal
Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the provincial Department
of Natural Resources and Energy. Short- and long-term management
actions were outlined and recommended to encourage a rebuilding
of some of the over-exploited fisheries and the development of those
that are under-utilized. Development of the strategy involved a
series of workshops designed and facilitated by ESSA in which stakeholders
with both complementary and competing interests worked together
to define the essential components of the strategy. After observing
the first workshop, native representatives in the province decided
to participate in subsequent meetings. This was the first time that
government representatives, stakeholders and First Nations had worked
together in such close collaboration to resolve fisheries management
issues. The final report for this project was adopted as a formal
strategy and published Fisheries and Oceans.
