The objective of the Environmental Program Formulation
Mission to Korea was to assist UNDP Korea to develop a sustainable,
integrated and technically sound Korea Environmental Program (KEP)
for the period 1994-1997. ESSA was responsible for overall program
development and co-ordination. This task included developing the
KEP Program Support Document (PSD), which provided for the overall
implementation of the KEP and preparation and planning of KEP projects,
including:
 |
establishment of an environmental risk assessment
system; |
 |
establishment of a water and marine pollution
monitoring program; and |
 |
development of a Sustainable Development Network
that would be co-ordinated by non-government organizations. |
The mission required extensive consultation with
Korean government and research agencies, and an in-depth review
of UNDP and Korean technical materials.
