The China-Canada Co-operation Project in Cleaner Production (CCCP-CP)
Canadian International Development Agency
ESSA and its partners executed a five-year, $10 million project on cleaner production (CP) in China. CP is recognized as an important means of achieving sustainable industrial development; it focuses on the production process rather than on end-of-pipe solutions, and results in improved production efficiencies with cost savings and a cleaner environment. The CCCP-CP assisted the Chinese government in developing and implementing CP policies, regulations and guidelines. Four industrial sectors were originally chosen for assistance: pulp and paper, fermentation, nitrogen fertilizer, and nitrochlorobenzene and nitrophenol manufacturing. Since then it has been expanded to include PCB/chloralkali. Both training and information technologies played an important role in the transfer of skills as well as in awareness raising. The success of the project stemmed from the combination of sound technical demonstrations and training, and promulgation of CP concepts and results to a broad audience.
The Project promoted gender equality by ensuring that women participated in project activities and were provided with training opportunities, and by providing gender equality awareness raising and training to project partners. The success of this project was recognized by CIDA. ESSA and its partners in the CCCP-CP were recently awarded CIDA’s International Cooperation award "for measures taken to incorporate women's opportunities and Gender Equality into the design and implementation of the project."
In a second phase of the CCCP-CP, ESSA participated in a 4 year $5 million cleaner production effort aimed at the western provinces (Xinjiang and Gansu), and on the oil and gas and non-ferrous metals sectors. ESSA's training expertise and awareness-raising /communications skills supported policy development, and the project has built a broad base of support for CP across the government and public.
