Development of an Environmental Awareness Strategy

As part of its initiative to coordinate and promote "cooperation in all fields of sustainable development, utilization, management and conservation of the water and related resources of the Mekong River Basin", the MRC formulated a long-term Environment Programme. One component was "Awareness Building". Having recognized the need for a comprehensive and clear strategy to support (and possibly supplement) its national environmental awareness building activities and to guide future activities, the MRC engaged ESSA to assist in its strategy development efforts. The project team used information pertaining to recent and on-going awareness building activities at the national level to develop a basis and an outline for an MRC strategy to address issues of building environmental awareness in the basin within the remit of MRC. Specific tasks included critically reviewing and commenting on key documents; holding interviews with MRC Communication Officers and other concerned officers; preparing a draft review of current activities, approaches and strategies for environmental awareness building; and outlining an environmental awareness building strategy for MRC.
