Environmental reporting is used by organizations
for a range of purposes: to document outcomes of environmental management
policy and practices, to track progress towards environmental goals,
or to record ambient environmental conditions. When done at regular
intervals it provides a mechanism to document changes over time
and longer-term trends. It provides a way for organizations (including
governments and businesses) to be more accountable to their constituents.
Good environmental reporting requires good environmental indicatorschosen
according to rigorous selection criteria, presented with the appropriate
reference measures (e.g. baselines or targets), and accompanied
by the necessary caveats and supporting documentation.
ESSA has provided leadership in indicators and
environmental reporting projects for over a decade. Our indicators
and environmental reporting team possesses dual expertise in process
and content. This combination makes it possible for ESSA to produce
environment reports that are scientifically rigorous, convey an
understanding of ecosystem dynamics, and use clear and effective
means of communication for the end user groupsbe they managers,
students, government policy makers or the general public. We have
particular skill in translating scientific/technical information
for non-technical audiences.
One of our areas of expertise within this domain
is State of Environment Reporting (SOER). Our team has worked on
over fifteen SOER projects in six countries, with products ranging
from videos to book-style reports and more concise indicator bulletins.
Each product is carefully tailored for the purpose and audience.
