State of Environment Reporting (SOER) is a mechanism
used by governments to record and monitor their compliance with
and progress in their management of the environment and environmental
issues. ESSA's SOER team sees this kind of reporting as a powerful
tool to make governments more accountable to the people they serve.
Our SOER team is unique because it possesses
dual expertise in process and content. This combination makes it
possible for ESSA to produce State of Environment Reports that are
scientifically rigorous, convey an understanding of ecosystem dynamics,
and use clear and effective means of communication for the end user
group whether they be managers, students, government policy makers
or the general public.
Our team has worked on over fifteen SOER Projects
in six countries. Each project has had a unique purpose and user
group. Some have included videos, though the final product of most
follows a report or guidebook format. As the medium matures, the
ESSA team will continue to refine the bounds and value of State
of Environment Reporting.
