Succession Moving Forward at ESSA

October 31, 2016

NEWS RELEASE

The ESSA Technologies Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Marmorek to the position of Lead Scientist & Senior Partner, and the appointment of Clint Alexander as President.

With ESSA since 1981, Dave Marmorek has provided exemplary and resilient leadership as President since 2001. In his new role as Lead Scientist & Senior Partner, Dave will continue to combine his technical knowledge (modelling, experimental design, adaptive management, decision analysis, environmental assessment) with people skills (facilitation and team leadership) to tackle environmental problems at various spatial scales, to promote ESSA’s work in these practice areas across North America, and to mentor ESSA’s talented and growing staff.

Transitioning from Director of Operations to President as part of ESSA’s succession planning, Clint takes over leadership of ESSA from Dave. Clint joined ESSA in 1997 as a Systems Ecologist, where over 19 years he was promoted through positions of increasing responsibility, including serving as a member of ESSA’s Management Team since 2006. Clint and Dave together led ESSA’s work in the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences domain, where much of this work has involved development of sophisticated decision support tools that integrate big and diverse data sources to create durable, intuitive visualization methods to understand trade-offs. Clint is very honoured to lead the ESSA team in helping our many valued clients adopt the mindset, collaborative outlook and innovative tools needed to sustain healthy ecosystems and human communities.

ESSA is also pleased to announce the following appointments:

  • Marc Nelitz will work with Carol Murray in leading ESSA’s work on adaptive management
  • Brian Ma will lead ESSA’s work in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
  • Jimena Eyzaguirre will lead ESSA’s International Team, and our work in Climate Change Adaptation
  • Darcy Pickard will lead ESSA’s work in Cumulative Effects Assessment

ESSA is a highly respected employee-owned Canadian environmental consulting company that has been in continuous operation for 37 years, with offices in Vancouver, British Columbia and Ottawa, Ontario. ESSA was founded in 1979 to creatively apply best science and systems thinking to help people tackle complex environmental and social problems. Those ideas, originally developed at the University of British Columbia, coalesced into the concept of Adaptive Management (AM), a rigorous framework and approach that we have applied in our work for 37 years. ESSA and our partners have advanced the application of AM concepts through 2300 projects in over 40 countries, helping our clients to implement sustainable solutions to challenging problems in environmental and resource management, and to do so in a structured manner that reveals robust decision pathways. At ESSA, we are passionate about what we do and take great pride in attracting, developing and retaining people who are leaders in their field that share our values and mission.
